Andrea Gervasoni, former VAR supervisor and a referee known for officiating various Serie A matches, including fixtures involving Sampdoria, has categorically denied any manipulation of the VAR audio related to the controversial Inter-Roma game. Following a four-hour interrogation in Milan, Gervasoni stated he is '100 per cent sure' the recordings were not altered, placing him at the heart of a new scandal shaking Italian football.
Italian football is once again grappling with a refereeing scandal, which sees the chief Serie A and B refereeing designator, Gianluca Rocchi, formally investigated for sporting fraud. In addition to Rocchi, four other figures from the refereeing world are under investigation, with interrogations commencing today in Milan. This climate of suspicion casts a shadow over the transparency of the national refereeing system.
While Gianluca Rocchi refused to appear before investigators, Andrea Gervasoni, who had suspended himself from his VAR supervisor position, fully cooperated. The former referee spent four hours with investigators, providing all necessary answers and reiterating his non-involvement in any wrongdoing. His willingness to cooperate contrasts with the silence of other suspects.
Upon leaving the police station, Gervasoni told reporters: 'I put myself at the disposal of the magistrate and now I will wait. I gave all the answers that I needed to.' He and his lawyer, Michele Ducci, confirmed that the interrogation focused on two specific matches: Salernitana-Modena and Inter-Roma.
Regarding Salernitana-Modena, Gervasoni and his lawyer clarified that the former supervisor was in a different building and was following Serie A, not Serie B games, thus ruling out any interference. As for Inter-Roma, the discussion specifically concerned an incident last season when a penalty was not awarded, a key detail in the investigation into the alleged manipulation of the VAR system.
The investigation continues to shed full light on the accusations of sporting fraud and VAR manipulation, with further developments expected in the coming days. Gervasoni's position, while denying all charges, remains under scrutiny as authorities seek to restore confidence in the refereeing integrity of Italian football.
